SPICY GREEN TOMATO CHUTNEY ( NORTH KARNATAKA )

Spicy green raw tomato chutney is another great favourite side dish or dip for wholesome jowar bhakris or chapatis . I also like to have it with dosas and idlis . For a even more spicier one add more green chilies .

I have given a different version earlier but this version comes from North Karnataka.

Green tomatoes chutney ( North Karnataka )

No of servings : 12  ( serving size 20 grams )
Calories per serving : 44 calories
Approx weight 250 grams

Ingredients

1.5 cups washed dried chopped firm green tomatoes
1 cup chopped onions
4 -5 green chillies
Some garlic pods
1/2 cup fresh grated coconut or dessicated coconut .
A pinch of asafoetida powder
1/2 cup finely chopped coriander leaves
1/4 cup peanuts
1/4 cup puttani/ pottukadalai / fried gram
Salt to taste
1 tbsp jaggery
1 tbsp oil

Method

In a pan heat some oil and lightly fry the peanuts till browned (skip this step if using already roasted nuts )
Add the fried dal now, and add the green chillies , garlic , onions, chopped tomatoes , coconut , and let the mixture cook till green tomatoes have softened a bit . Do not add water .

Let the mixture cool down , then add the jaggery , salt and the coriander leaves and blend to a paste . Do not add water .

Store well in a clean dry container and store in fridge . Will stay good for a week .

You can also make it without onions , garlic and coconut .
Usually folks in North Karnataka make it in this manner to have with jowar bhakris or chapatis.

Tastes good with dosas and idlis too.
